Dr. Scott D. Gillogly is a prominent orthopedic surgeon in Atlanta. He is the head team physician for the Atlanta Thrashers NHL hockey team and the Atlanta
Falcons NFL football team. Dr. Gillogly has specialized in sports medicine since completing a distinguished military career in the Army Medical Corps with the
rank of lieutenant colonel. He received meritorious service commendations as chief of orthopedics at an evacuation hospital during Operations Desert
Shield/Storm. As a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Gillogly was captain and quarterback of the Army football team.
Now Dr. Gillogly is being recognized for another aspect of his remarkable life - as the consummate collector of Matchbox toy vehicles. His Matchbox collection,
said to be the most comprehensive ever assembled, will be sold by Vectis Auctions on Sept. 16 and 17 in Middlesbrough, England. The collection of approximately
3,500 of the tiny cars and trucks may well top $1 million.
Gillogly's interest in Matchbox collecting sprang from his childhood when he played with many of the toys. "This was renewed several decades later and
like all collectors it is the memories of simpler times, coupled with the collecting mentality, that led to a reinvigorated assembly of my extensive
collection," said Gillogly.
Now in his mid-50s, Gillogly has decided to sell the collection in Britain where he believes the toys will generate higher prices.
"He just feels now that the chase is over and he has collected as many variations as he can," said Andrew Reed, Vectis Auctions' diecast
specialist, in an interview with the Daily Mail newspaper in London.
Reed flew to Atlanta recently to pack the models for shipment back to the UK. Reed said that he knew the collection would be exceptional, but was still amazed
at the sheer quality and condition of the models. The auction will start Sept. 16 with numbers 1-25 Regular Wheels - 550 models - all different variations.
Many are mint boxed models together with Gift Sets and early Moko and Ephemera. The collection has nine variations of the No. 20 Chevy Impala Taxi, including a
trial color in green and also a gray plastic-wheel issue.
Very rare an expensive BP wrecker.
The Sept. 17 session will be devoted to a panoramic collection of Superfast models made by Matchbox from 1969 to 1982. Included will be 11 variations of the
No. 70 Dodge Dragster.
The auction will be conducted before a gallery audience. As usual, Vectis will offer live online bidding in association with LiveAuctioneers.com and
ebayliveauctions.com. The sessions will begin at noon both days. Contact +44 1642 750616, e-mail them directly , or go to the Web site www.vectis.co.uk.
These eight vehicles represent a scarce presentation set. Only a few were issued.
