Creating quite a stir over at HWC with guys complaining because it isn't being distributed FREE. It still amazes me how much some folks expect from Mattel.

Here is how I see it, it is $10 plus shipping and handling for a full metal VW. With the gas prices continually going upwards, this is pretty economical. I,
for one, am going to buy this and happily put it in my collection.

just another bad PR deal from mattel. "we were gonna give these to our RLC folks as a thank you ...
but we made too many 'cause we still can't effectively communicate with our factory. we have to clear them out." so now everybody has to buy them. an example of giving TOO much info. just shoulda said it's a bonus car for everyone at a cheap price. marketing folks must be young and inexperienced. dave

I do think that in order to be a true "Thank You" it should have been FREE as in previous years.
However, I had no expectation of this at all given how Mattel usually does things. I mean, they (along with ExxonMobile) were one of the few corporations still posting record profits last year. This simply boggles my mind that they now play the "we're hurting, so you'll have to buy it" card. However, I took a look at the info: Key numbers for fiscal year ending December, 2007: Sales: $5,970.1M One year growth: 5.7% Net income: $600.0M Income growth: 1.2% And this year's data is still not fully complete so its hard to compare... but here's what is available so far, for those interested: (some accounting knowledge may be required for interpreting the following, but they are public knowledge) Income Statement Balance Sheet Cash Flow Statement Before you label me as a basher or a negative one, let me assure you, I did indeed purchase the beach bomb pickup. And I also added the 40th beetle to my order. That's TWO Cars for the usual $20 shipped price of ONE RLC car. I can't pass on a bargain. I'd say it was win win for both Big M and Me.

should have been free that's what the bus was a few years agon and i think the hotbird too.just a way of the Mpire trying to look good but causing a stir
insted.i can not believe they would be dumb enough to think no one would be kinda upset.they should have just kept their mouth shut andoffered it as a
discounted item and quit trying to be "we out for the collectors"

hey gary we expect alot because we spend alot every year on their products and in my opinion we shoould deserver alittle kick back once in a while, but just
like every other greedy corporation they will always take more than they will ever give.
I am afraid the logic of this statement escapes me. You spend a lot more for electricity, do you expect something free from the electric company? LOL Seriously, Mattel's first responsibility is to provide the maximum return on investment for the stockholders. They only need to do for the customers the absolute minimum necessary to keep them buying. They don't NEED to improve quality as long as errors are worth more to collectors than good product. They don't need to reduce prices as long as they have mostly product sell outs at current prices They don't need to introduce a lot of new tooling when we scramble to purchase every single release in a new color. For what it's worth, I don't buy into a lot of the collector hype and haven't bought anything from HWC since the Neo Classics Poison Pinto and I haven't bought a Mattel premium product at full price for years. We will see changes in Mattel marketing when sales actually decrease. There are dozens of collectors standing in line to buy the stuff you or I refuse to fall for.... LOL. gunslinger gary wilcox

when has the power company of any other said "hey we are offering you a thank you bill for free power this month" than after a few years they say
"here is the same thank you bill but since we have been gouging your for all thses years we will give it to you for a few bucks off the total and charge
you for us to mail it too you".

I agree with you Wilcox as Mattel is only there to make the cheapest car avaliable for you to buy
and not really thinking about the suppose Collectors as these Cars were meant for Kids from the 60's. The Corp hasnt changed from then to now in thinking what the people want, they only think $$$. If they thought about us then they should be thinking of making only real looking Cars and not these off beat funny looking Cars they make for the Mainline Sets and Sub Sets we see today in the lineup.... Most Collectors BUY EVERYTHING they make for the year so in my opinion all they really care about is pumping out the Cars to get the $$$$$$ and keep the Color Variations rolling. The Thank You Car is no different than those Sorry Cars they gave out in the 90's....Ooops did i say gave out i meant to say sold to you for a cheaper price.....Those are just to make you think they care. You have to be silly to think they care.... LOL Who owes us anything is the Damn Oil Corps ...Dont get me started on who owes who lol |
